Year 2000 Compliance of Intelligent Modem Unit (IMU)

IMU Overview

The Intelligent Modem Unit (IMU) is a HART modem with an on-board microprocessor for communication with host computer.  It connects to the host computer via an RS-232 port.  The IMU incorporates a high precision A/D converter so that it can read the 4-20 mA output of an attached HART field device.  The IMU provides pass-through transmission of host computer HART commands and field device responses.  It includes the data link layer HART protocol logic.  It also accumulates, and can report to the host computer, field device communications statistics.  The IMU was developed and marketed by ASTEC.  It is now a discontinued product.

Dates in the IMU

There is only one function in the IMU that uses or contains a date.   The IMU stores the date of the original factory calibration constants and the date of any subsequent field calibration.  The storage location in the IMU provides for a full four digit year.  The calibration dates reported to the Cornerstone software in the host computer are always displayed on the screen using a full four digit year, in the form "08:30:00 Wed 08-Jul-2019".

The IMU has been tested to insure that it can correctly accept, store, and report back to the host computer, dates beyond the year 2000.

Within the IMU, or the Cornerstone software, there is no computation performed involving dates.  Nor is there any decision making using dates.  There are therefore no year 2000 "transition" issues whatsoever with the IMU.

In short, the IMU is, and has been tested to be, completely compliant with the year 2000 transition.
